Jimmy meets photographer Jimmy Nelson

0

I arrive at Slettvoll concept store at Regeringsgatan in Stockholm city center at 6 pm. Offered a glass of bubbly I head for the huge book on the table and decide to put on the gloves that are strategicly placed for people like me that have to meddle with things at the vernissage.

When I turn the first pages of the book Before they pass away,  Jimmy Nelson appear on my left side and says : thank you for wearing those (the gloves…I did not touch anything else…)

How exciting to meet the photographer in person behind these amazing photos as of a world I have never seen. I take my right glove off to say hello properly and Mr Nelson, Jimmy, says nice to meet you Jimmy.

The women behind me that has been looking over my shoulder when I was turning the pages of the huge book steps in and completely takes over. She talks about how she looks up to Mr Nelson and his incredible photos and her adoration of the man, the myth, the photographer.

Mr Nelson soon says he is going to start his presentation and he steps up on the small stage and starts addressing the big crowd that is waiting to hear from the man who´s photos we have seen but know so little about. The person behind and the stories that must come with the adventures that everyone understand is part of the documentation of the real people of the remote tribes that has become his forte.

Not only does he tell the story of how he crossed a remote region of Siberia large as France in a antique tank for over a month in search of an extinct tribe, he also unveils his photos of the tribe of Slettvoll. Dressed in the fabrics used for the furniture of Slettvoll the workers at the  factory have been portrayed by Jimmy as you see above.

2018 Jimmy is publishing a new book. To accompany the book a phone App is being constructed so that when you look at a photo in the book you can scan a code and see the 360° view of the shoot. Now that is something to look forward to!

To have Jimmy Nelson over for dinner and hear his stories of his search for the lost tribes of the world must be the most interesting guest to listen to and cook for.
