Colour House Trendseminarium

0

Interview with Tom Windeknecht

0
I have been following Tom Windeknecht on instagram for a while now and was so happy when he wanted to be interviewed. Sorry for switching to english, but i hope it is ok. Check out more of Toms great work here.
1. How did you get interested in colour? and what are you working on at the moment?
I got interested in color in the 80’s. Fashion and design were shifting at that time from natural, earthy tones to bright colors that popped. I was a young kid, but that era brought so much color and life – from album covers and clothing to graphic design and art. The colors brought energy and excitement! I always took art classes and enjoyed playing with colors. Then, when I got on Instagram a few years ago, I started seeing all of these pops of color again. It recharged me! Right now, I am working on minimal photography and content creation that uses bright and fun colors to accentuate the work.

2. Where do you get inspired?
I would say my biggest inspiration comes from other artists on Instagram and the art community. There is some great color schemes and creativity coming from creators such as Matt Crump (@mattcrump) and Lizzie Darden (@lizziedarden) on Instagram.
3. what is the biggest misstake you can do working with colours?
Personally, I feel that my biggest mistake when working with colors is using too many. I try to keep my images down to 2-3 colors. Some artists can use many colors and their work looks great, but I limit myself. I guess I am staying safe =)
4. what is the trend in colours going towards in the future in your country?
Current in the United States, the colors seem to be bright and bold. People love bright colors that pop and make a statement. I am feeling the trend will go tone down and move towards softer colors and pastels. But, I think the bright colors will probably stick around for another year or so.
5. What is your view on colour politics?
Colors play a role in our lives. It affects our moods and our purchasing decisions. We see it every day in product packaging, commercials, restaurants and even our homes and cars. I feel that color has a huge influence on people. A colorful outfit and can change the way you feel and express yourself. In public spaces, most art is very colorful – people are naturally drawn to colors. Depending on the colors used, they definitely can help make an impact. Sometimes, the absence of color is the best way to make an impact – to draw emotion and make a sobering statement.

6. anything else you would like to say on colours or your work?
I like to use colors that catch a person’s eyes and makes them stop to look. I like happy and fun colors that let someone see an object or location differently – even something as typical as an old neon motel sign. There is enough negativity in the world. I want people to smile and enjoy what they are seeing, and put something positive into their view.
